The National Institutes of Health funds exploratory bioengineering research projects that develop new solutions or improvements to problems in basic research, pre-clinical research, clinical care, or accessibility. Organisations including nonprofits, universities, small businesses, tribal governments, and foreign entities may apply, with applications due by 7 January 2028.

Through this engineering-oriented Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO), the National Cancer Institute (NCI) intends to encourage submissions of exploratory/developmental Bioengineering Research Grant (EBRG) applications to demonstrate feasibility and potential utility of new capabilities or improvements in quality, speed, efficacy, operability, costs, and/or accessibility of solutions to problems in basic biomedical, pre-clinical, or clinical research, clinical care delivery, or accessibility.

Applicant types: Nonprofits having a 501(c)(3) status with the IRS, other than institutions of higher education; Independent school districts; Others (see text field entitled "Additional Information on Eligibility" for clarification); For profit organizations other than small businesses; State governments; City or township governments; Native American tribal organizations (other than Federally recognized tribal governments); Native American tribal governments (Federally recognized); Small businesses; County governments; Special district governments; Public and State controlled institutions of higher education; Public housing authorities/Indian housing authorities; Private institutions of higher education; Nonprofits that do not have a 501(c)(3) status with the IRS, other than institutions of higher education
Other Eligible Applicants include the following:
Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions; Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISISs); Eligible Agencies of the Federal Government; Faith-based or Community-based Organizations; Hispanic-serving Institutions; Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs); Indian/Native American Tribal Governments (Other than Federally Recognized); Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations); Regional Organizations; Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCCUs) ; U.S. Territory or Possession.
