The NIH Pathway to Independence Award supports postdoctoral researchers with research or clinical doctorates to transition to independent faculty positions at US institutions, funding their research during this career launch phase. Applications from US-based nonprofits, universities, government agencies, and other eligible organizations are due by 7 May 2027.

The purpose of the NIH Pathway to Independence Award (K99/R00) program is to increase and maintain a strong cohort of new and talented, NIH-supported, independent investigators. This program is designed to facilitate a timely transition of outstanding postdoctoral researchers with a research and/or clinical doctorate degree from mentored, postdoctoral research positions to independent, tenure-track or equivalent faculty positions. The program will provide independent NIH research support during this transition in order to help awardees to launch competitive, independent research careers.

Applicant types: Native American tribal organizations (other than Federally recognized tribal governments); Nonprofits having a 501(c)(3) status with the IRS, other than institutions of higher education; Small businesses; Public and State controlled institutions of higher education; Independent school districts; Public housing authorities/Indian housing authorities; Private institutions of higher education; Others (see text field entitled "Additional Information on Eligibility" for clarification); State governments; City or township governments; Native American tribal governments (Federally recognized); For profit organizations other than small businesses; County governments; Special district governments; Nonprofits that do not have a 501(c)(3) status with the IRS, other than institutions of higher education
Other Eligible Applicants include the following:
Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions; Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISISs); Eligible Agencies of the Federal Government; Faith-based or Community-based Organizations; Hispanic-serving Institutions; Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs); Indian/Native American Tribal Governments (Other than Federally Recognized); Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations); Regional Organizations; Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCCUs) ; U.S. Territory or Possession; Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations) are not eligible to apply.
Non-domestic (non-U.S.) components of U.S. Organizations are not eligible to apply.
Foreign components, as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement, are allowed.
