The National Institutes of Health funds exploratory bioengineering research projects that demonstrate new capabilities or improvements to solutions in biomedical, pre-clinical, or clinical research and care delivery. Universities, nonprofits, small businesses, government bodies, and foreign organisations may apply, with applications due by 7 January 2028.

Through this engineering-oriented Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO), the National Cancer Institute (NCI) intends to encourage submissions of exploratory/developmental Bioengineering Research Grant (EBRG) applications to demonstrate feasibility and potential utility of new capabilities or improvements in quality, speed, efficacy, operability, costs, and/or accessibility of solutions to problems in basic biomedical, pre-clinical, or clinical research, clinical care delivery, or accessibility.

Applicant types: Public and State controlled institutions of higher education; City or township governments; Native American tribal organizations (other than Federally recognized tribal governments); Private institutions of higher education; County governments; State governments; Native American tribal governments (Federally recognized); Public housing authorities/Indian housing authorities; Others (see text field entitled "Additional Information on Eligibility" for clarification); Special district governments; Small businesses; Nonprofits having a 501(c)(3) status with the IRS, other than institutions of higher education; For profit organizations other than small businesses; Independent school districts; Nonprofits that do not have a 501(c)(3) status with the IRS, other than institutions of higher education
Other Eligible Applicants include the following:
Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions; Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISISs); Eligible Agencies of the Federal Government; Faith-based or Community-based Organizations; Hispanic-serving Institutions; Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs); Indian/Native American Tribal Governments (Other than Federally Recognized); Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations); Regional Organizations; Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCCUs) ; U.S. Territory or Possession.
