The US National Institutes of Health funds preclinical proof-of-concept projects developing novel recording and modulation technologies to treat, diagnose, or understand central nervous system diseases, with grants up to 750,000 US dollars. Awarded activities will facilitate the translation of novel recording and modulation technologies that can be used to treat and/or diagnose central nervous system (CNS) diseases and disorders and to better understand the human CNS, from proof of concept up to the stage of readiness for first in human (FIH) studies. Technologies may incorporate any signal modality (e.g., electrical, optical, magnetic, acoustic) or a combination thereof. Diverse team-based applications that integrate appropriate domains of expertise are encouraged.

Applicant types: Native American tribal organizations (other than Federally recognized tribal governments); Nonprofits having a 501(c)(3) status with the IRS, other than institutions of higher education; Special district governments; Nonprofits that do not have a 501(c)(3) status with the IRS, other than institutions of higher education; City or township governments; County governments; Public and State controlled institutions of higher education; Private institutions of higher education; Small businesses; Independent school districts; State governments; Native American tribal governments (Federally recognized); Others (see text field entitled "Additional Information on Eligibility" for clarification); Public housing authorities/Indian housing authorities; For profit organizations other than small businesses
Other Eligible Applicants include the following:
Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions; Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISISs); Eligible Agencies of the Federal Government; Faith-based or Community-based Organizations; Hispanic-serving Institutions; Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs); Indian/Native American Tribal Governments (Other than Federally Recognized); Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations); Regional Organizations; Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCCUs) ; U.S. Territory or Possession; Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations) are not eligible to apply.
Non-domestic (non-U.S.) components of U.S. Organizations are not eligible to apply.
Foreign components, as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement, are allowed.
